Veronica Anne and I have known each other since we were both about 12 or 13-years-old, back in our uniform wearing days of plaid skirts and white t-shirts at the private school we went to. Then, high school rolled around and we both moved on together, where we were able to express our individuality a little more and became a bit closer as friends. We bunked in the same room during our school’s annual trip to Hume Lake, obsessed over Twilight and sat next to each other during Bible during our senior year. Veronica was always outspoken and did her own thing, which I always admired about her. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, at a time when most girls (including myself) were constantly worrying about what others would think of their hair, their clothes or more importantly, their opinions. She fought for the things that meant a lot to her, and that’s something she’s still doing today.
One day, a couple of years ago, I found out that she had a YouTube account and decided to check it out. I quickly saw that she had quite the following and she was such a natural, with haul and thrifting videos and also realized that she had such a unique way of pulling outfits together and finding great deals while thrifting (which is also a hobby of mine). I caught up on all of the videos and obsessed over her style. She’s different from most of the YouTubers I’ve seen in that she’s very educated when she speaks about something and includes more than just the typical beauty reviews – she goes a bit deeper. I’m fascinated by her style and thought maybe you all would be, too! So, here’s a little Q&A 🙂 Enjoy!
First off, tell us a little about yourself and some of your biggest passions.
My name is Veronica and I am a recent graduate from University of California Santa Cruz. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and graduated with honors. I’m currently living in an apartment with my boyfriend and our two kitties (Remus and Tonks, Holla Harry Potter fans!) At the moment one of my biggest passions is my work. I am currently working at an outreach center as a Case Manager and my clients are victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual assault. I also am very passionate about school. I will be starting my Master’s program in Counseling Psychology in just a few weeks. Lastly, I love thrifting, painting with watercolors, drawing with charcoal/graphite, spray painting, and recently I started doing the Insanity workout with my work colleagues!
What is a typical day in your life like?
A typical day for me? Well, I generally wake up around 5 AM to feed the cats (not my choice). I get ready and head to work and drink a few cups of coffee. Coffee really is my fuel. On the daily I assist clients with preparing for court, filling out restraining orders, safety planning, accompanying clients to the hospital after a reported Sexual Assault, etc. I know, it doesn’t sound very fun but it is quite rewarding. After work I work out with my co-workers and try not to pass out. Then I head home (maybe stop to thrift for a half hour) and make dinner. I play with the kitties and read in the later evening, or play video games. Generally I go to sleep no later than 11:00PM. I am absolutely useless with less than 8 hours of sleep.
You seem to truly be an artist at heart. What are some of your favorite things to create?
Well thank you! I think my favorite is spray paint art. I became obsessed last summer and taught myself. I just love how the painting can really look a mess until the very end and then all of a sudden BAM! It’s beautiful!
You have your BA in Psychology. What are you doing/hoping to do with it in the future?
Well, currently I am doing Case Management work with victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Although it is loosely tied to my interests, my dream position would be to lecture at a university and also have my own private practice on the side. I am also very interested in the prison population.
You’ve been posting videos about thrifting and beauty for awhile now. What ultimately made you decide start? How did you decide what theme you were going to stick with?
Honestly, the movie Twilight made me decide to start. Can you believe that? I was trying to search “Bella’s makeup” and could not find a good video to show me how to do makeup like hers! I decided that I could probably film something and it would be just as good or better than what I found. The theme has been interesting since my style has evolved so much. I think I really decided on a “theme” when I started getting into thrifiting freshman year of college and people seem to love those videos the most! However, I still say that my “theme” is really just me and whatever I decided to record coming out of my mouth that day ☺
What are some of your favorite pieces that you’ve thrifted?
This is quite literally one of the hardest questions to answer. I love so many pieces! I love all of my vintage pyrex. Something about pyrex is so comforting to me. I also adore all of my denim jackets (yes, I have more than one and no, I don’t need all of them). Lastly, one of my favorite things to find is anything that has a vingtage tapestry style/look to it. I call it “carpet” material. I have a few overnight bags that are floral “carpet” bags and just recently found a cat “carpet” coat.
Do you have any tips or tricks for those who enjoy thrifting, but are also on a college/20-something budget?
I think that thrifting is perfect if you are on a budget! I get so many of my professional work clothes from thrift stores. My biggest tip is to go often but buy less. What I mean is that I recommend thrifiting often (because it’s fun and you will get your “fix” by just being there) but limit what you purchase to things you absolutely “need”. However, this is definitely easier said than done! ☺
What are some things that you are willing to spend a bit more for?
I am definitely willing to spend a bit more on shoes. I absolutely love thrifitng shoes but if they are nice (ie name brand, good materials, etc.) you can expect to pay a bit more for them.
You seem to have a style that is unique and entirely you’re own. How would you describe it?
I really have no idea. Quirky…retro…bohemian…gothic…grunge…preppy….Yeah, I have no idea. My style really changes all the time. Sometimes all I want to wear is a band t-shirt, black skinny jeans and a denim jacket and sometimes I want to wear a maxi dress with heels, it all depends! I definitely love wearing that one statement piece that will make people look twice… I think people’s reactions are funny. ☺
Do you have a style icon or anyone whose style you might try to emulate from time to time? Where do you draw inspiration from?
I absolutely love Alexa Chung (but who doesn’t?), Gigi Hadid is pretty cool and I also like Jennifer Lawrence’s style sometimes. I mostly draw my inspiration for outfits in individual pieces. For example, if I find a really amazing coat then I build my outfit around that aesthetic, you know?
What is your go-to date outfit?
My go-to date outfit is probably something black but that’s pretty much my go-to everyday outfit. Maybe a black backless dress with Chelsea boots, leather jacket and a statement lip color!
Who are some of your favorite YouTubers?
I adore Sarah Hawkinson, SarahWhiteGirl, Anastasia Louise, Thrift Thick, Augusta Jeorgia, Rachel Whitehurst, Phillip DeFranco, Shane Dawson, Drew Monson, Haley Blais, Trisha Paytas, SoothingSista, The Fashion Citizen, Laura in the Kitchen, Byron Talbot, The Domestic Geek, Makeup by TiffanyD, Chelsea Wears, danger0usperson, Booksandquills, and Grav3yardgirl just to name a few 😉 I do like a lot more people, but those were the ones that popped into my head!
What do you have to carry in your purse at all times?
I carry a very small purse most of the time so generally I always have my wallet, phone, chapstick, lipstick, mirror and my business cards! That’s it!
Where are some of your favorite places to shop/brands you usually gravitate towards?
I obviously love thrifting but I also really enjoy shopping in H&M, Bass (for shoes), JC Penny, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Sephora, Ulta, Bath and Body works (obvi) and Macys.
What is your usual daily beauty routine? What products do you use?
My daily routine is fairly simple. I always use my Boscia Tsubaki oil for my face. I generally keep it simple with a tinted moisturizer, light powder, blush (Tarte carries my favorite blushes), eyebrows (Anastasia dipbrow), my signature winged eyeliner (currently using Stila black liquid eyeliner), and two coats of mascara (currently using Loreal Butterfly Intenza). Sometimes I feel daring and wear a red lip to work too. ☺
What are some of your favorite things (beauty or otherwise) right now?
A few of my favorite things right now are Adele’s 19 album, mason jars, Lime Crime’s velvetine in Wicked, Anastasia dipbrow, post-it notes, Insanity, loafers and my cats.
What is your personal advice when it comes to style?
My personal advice is to wear whatever the hell you want. I have heard so many times, “Wear some color!” and “Why do you wear so much black?” and “Why do you wear such bright lip colors, it’s weird.” I have to keep telling myself that this is my life and this is my body and I have the right to wear what I want! I love being quirky and not wearing what everyone else wears. I like being unique. Maybe that’s my style…unique.
With your degree, do you hope to incorporate more of the Psych Talk with Vern into your channel?
ABSOLUTELY! I have taken a break from YouTube for a while since I was getting adjusted to working full time and I am so ready to jump back into it.
What inspired you to start your Etsy shops? Are you still selling products on those sites?
I honestly got to a point where I realized I had WAY too much cool stuff that was going to waste because I wasn’t wearing it! I would still love to sell items but it would have to be in the future when I felt I could properly manage all of my responsibilities.
What is a mantra or motto that you live your life by?
Just kidding. But in all seriousness I live by the idea that I can only do so much in a day and as long as I try my best everyday, then I should be proud. Not sure if that is a quote somewhere or a “mantra” but I think it’s true. I am what you may call a perfectionist sometimes and I have to come to realize that I will never be perfect but I am the only one that will ever be perfectly me. Does that make sense? Haha.
And I have to be incredibly cheesy and ask…Where do you hope to see yourself in five years?
Not cheesy at all, in fact I think about this all the time! I hope to have my master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, living somewhere in Northern California (or just the Northern West Coast) with my boyfriend and our cats. I also hope that I will be seeking out a PhD program in whatever area I am interested in at that time. I also hope to have a garden, an in-home library, and be able to run more than a mile without throwing up. ☺
Until next time,
